Today I completed a Video treatment. This document is just a basic outline of what the video is about, what type of characters there are and what happens in the video itself. I enjoy making video treatments because it allows me to section out what will happen during the video.
First of all, I described the characters. I basically copy and pasted the background information I wrote the character profile on to this document as I was going to write the same thing anyways. Like I said before, I believe the background has enough detail in them for the characters to be believable and relatable.
Next, I briefly explained what the video is about. I didn’t write a lot in this section as the next section explains in slightly more detail on what will happen. The reason why I didn’t explain every single detail in this document was because if I were to hand this synopsis to a film maker, there more likely to just skim through important parts of the projects rather than read the whole document. Keeping it short and brief guarantees, someone will read through the majority of it.
In the next section, I split up the story into 3 parts (including the intro). I did this because it allows both the reader and I to quickly read through and understand the general story line of the video. Like I said before, keeping it short and to the point guarantees someone will read through the majority of the paper. The way I planned this out was going through the poem and highlighting where I wanted the video to be filmed in the studio and where I would film at home.
After that I made sure that I included all the relevant information needed on this task. I’m confident that I have noted all the necessary details in this document. I will eventually run it by one of my lectures to double check that I haven’t missed out anything.
Just as I mentioned, film treatments are used to show readers and business partners the gist of the video without overloading the person with too much information. The document is somewhat small in quantity, but has enough detail in it that it lets the reader understand who the characters are and what will happen in the picture.
I enjoy making video treatments because once I get to this stage it feels as though the project has a structure at last and pretty much everything circulates around this paper. My next task now is to create a story board and shot list along side it. Unlike my last project I’m really hoping I can get this done without any complications.
