Today I started and finished both a mood board and storyboard. A storyboard is used to help visualise how you want your film to look like. They can be hand-drawn or use different digital images to tell the story.
Personally, I prefer to find images on Google or any other free image source to use on my storyboard, I can’t draw that well so I tend to just surf the internet for images that are similar to what I would try to draw. However, this method can be difficult sometimes because it’s hard to find images that are similar to what you have in mind. Sometimes I can find an image straight away, and sometimes it will take be about 5-10 minutes to find one suitable image.
Storyboard
I made sure that the storyboard was kept simple with easy direction throughout. I managed to find suitable images on google quite quickly which really helped me complete this in as little time as possible.
The storyboard starts off with a chair in a dark setting. I’m hoping to get shots similar to this in my video for the confession scenes because it will give a dark and sinister atmosphere to the video from the start.
Next is a woman standing next to a window. I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted but this was the closest I could find. my idea is that Daisy will turn away from the camera and look outside the window looking lonely.
The third photo describes how the screen goes black as the murder takes place. I don’t want to film a pretend murder because I feel as though it would be too graphic to put into the video, also we’re going to be using a real knife as a prop so I don’t want Ioan to accidentally hurt Daisy. to combat this, the next shot with be the knife covered in fake blood and dripping,
After this I’ll have quick shots of Daisy laying on the floor passed away and covered in blood, and Ioan looking down at Daisy out of breath and covered in blood too. This will show that he has committed the murder. He then looks into the mirror beside him – still in shock.
The murder then rushes to wash his hands in the bathroom to hide the evidence that he’s done it. I thought this shot would be interesting because it shows that he’s regretting the crime he’s committed and washes away the blood to forget what he just did.
Next will be a flashback of the couple arguing with each other. I thought this could give some insight into their relationship prior to the murder taking place. They got into a heated argument about her cheating on him and he snapped.
I wanted to emphasise the evidence this person had for her infidelity, so I thought I could buy a cheap silver heart necklace, maybe cover it in blood and have it dangling off something. This shot will give the video an even more sinister feel to it which is what I want to achieve.
When he’s reminiscing about the time together, I thought it would be a good idea to have the word ‘SLUT’ written in blood on the bathroom mirror. Again, it shows the mental state this person is in and the resentment he feels towards her.
I believe my storyboard is clear enough to understand. I’ll be printing it off in the next day or so to add some writing around each photograph.
Mood board
I’ve always felt as though I’m not the best at making mood boards simply because I don’t fully understand what is meant to be featured on them. I’ve done multiple mood boards throughout my time at college and I believe I’m doing them right, but I’m still not entirely sure if I am doing them the correct way. Saying that, I haven’t had any complaints about the mood boards I’ve made, so I’m guessing I have been doing them right.
Despite my doubts, I just made the mood board how I would normally do them. I included a few photos of how I want the theme of the video to look. The main theme of my video is murder and crime, so I included photos of a crime scene tape, a bloody knife and someone in a prison cell. I also included words that described what happens in the video and the themes that are included in the video too. This gives it more context rather than just leaving a handful of photos on a piece of paper.
Alongside this, I added some photos about the characters. A couple cheating, a woman checking her phone discreetly and a woman with mascara falling down her cheeks. This shows that the relationship isn’t a stable one anymore and gives some sort of backstory to the video I’m going to make.
I do believe that this mood board clearly shows that the video’s main focus is about murder and committing a crime. My video will most likely be somewhat graphic so I will have to put a warning up on the start of the video to make the viewer aware of this.
Story boards and mood boards help visualise the idea of a film or video to an outside perspective. It’s especially helpful when it’s hard to explain a complicated or very in-depth story to someone. By showing the story to someone through illustrations it makes it easier for us to understand the story line and theme of the film/video.
I enjoy making storyboards because it allows me to show how I see my videos playing out in my thoughts to other people. I like sharing my ideas and for my thoughts to be shown physically just makes the project flow nicely. It also allows you to make a shot list based on the images and captions on the story board and mood board.
Storyboards and mood boards need to be made whenever making an original video/film because it shows your thought process and allows you to develop and scrap ideas. Storyboards are useful to take on set of filming to remind you how the story should play out. I always take my storyboard on set with me, as well as shot lists and the call sheets because they’re the more important documents of a project.
My next plan is to start making a shot list for my video. I’m also going to book the studio at college to practise doing silhouettes. My plan is to have the confession scenes inspired by film noir. I’ll be making strong contrasts between light and dark shadows and hopefully I can make Ioan seem like he’s a cold and careless person.
