Today I decided to make a Risk assessment sheet. I feel as though this may be one of the quickest forms to fill out in the project folder, so I chose to do it now rather than later. The purpose of risk assessments is for you to prove that you’re aware of the risks that may happen, and you can state how to reduce the possibility of those risks actually happening on set.
I first filled out the basic risks in an everyday environment which are slips, trips and falls. These can be caused by puddles on the floor or loose wires/cables as well as obstructions in walkways.
For the next few I listed, I tried to think of any other risks that I wouldn’t normally consider. Allergies and inexperience were risks that I believed could happen in any situation. Allergies can be caused through food, makeup or the environment of the shoot taking place. Inexperience on using equipment could lead to injuries. Items stacked on top of each other could become unstable and seriously hurt someone passing by.
The last risk I listed was taking into consideration of if we were to film outside on a street. Cars or any other form of transport need to be made aware of as serious injury could happen to both the crew and driver of the car.
Once I listed these risks, I explained what could happen if these were to actually happen. I then mentioned how to reduce these risks from happening. This will also keep other people on set aware of what may happen and the measures we can take to stop them from happening.
The final two sections were how likely these risks were going to happen and if there were any further precautions we would have to take. I took inspiration from my own experience and the majority of the risks i listed as low, but there were a few risks I listed as medium because I believed they would be more likely to happen. As for any further measures, I just used common sense and filled in what I would do in that situation.
Overall this activity didn’t take me long to complete. I find it somewhat easy to identify big and small risks because I like to believe i’m somewhat observant. It’s important to make these documents because it shows that you have planned to keep everyone safe on set and have made notes on what could happen and how to prevent them. Next I will be making the Health and Safety document which I should be able to post around the beginning of April.
