What happened during filming

Filming began on the 29th of April and finished on May 3rd. In these 5  days, I was determined to shoot everything I could so that I could start editing the following Tuesday.

The first day of filming was shot in my house. Both Daisy and Ioan managed to arrive at roughly the same time, so we filmed as soon as everyone was ready. Me and Ioan had practised a few shots that I thought would be difficult to film before Daisy had arrived. I thought this would be a good idea so that I knew what I wanted those shots to look like when I actually started filming.

We managed to get the majority of the video filmed in around 3 hours which was a surprise to me as I thought it was going to take longer. Daisy and Ioan worked very well together which was a big relief as they’ve only met one or twice before, but the way they connected on set felt believable through the camera lens.

As I was filming, Ioan gave me a few helpful tips on directing and framing, as well as incorporating his own ideas into the video. For example, there’s a shot where Ioan accidentally rubs his face with Daisy’s ‘blood’ in front of candlelight. The shot is very eerie and that’s exactly the type of effect I want in the video.

The second day of filming was in the college studio. I had booked the studio for 3 hours which I thought was more than enough time to start filming. The first hour was spent with Daisy and Ioan. I took pictures of them together acting like a couple. My original plan was to have these photos included in the video, but I chose not to do this because it didn’t look right in the video.

Once the photos we done, Daisy had to leave for work so I began filming Ioan’s confession scenes on the backdrop.  I flipped the camera settings to black and white for the film noir effect I was aiming for. During editing I knew I could make the contrast between light and dark shadows more prominent.

Ioan was really helpful helping me out with lighting and suggesting ideas throughout the filming process. We followed the lines of the poem and I highlighted where I would want the confession scenes to be played in the video. We experimented with the coloured studio lights, but because of the positioning of the backdrop it just didn’t look right on the camera. Filming with just Ioan in the studio only took around an hour to do as well.

Throughout the rest of the week, I filmed extra shots to include in the video in case I needed the video to be slightly longer in editing. I knew that the poem is quite short, so I took these extra shots in case my lecturers asked to see more in the story.

Tuesday Evening, me and Ioan started to record his voice over for the video. I asked ioan to pause after each sentence so that it would give me enough space to cut and place the audio clips in the video where I needed them to be. Ioan was very patient with me as I wanted to do at least 2 or 3 takes for each stanza. This was done so that I had 3 clips of each sentence that I could decide on which was best,

I’m really happy with how the filming process went. Compared to the client brief project, this went completely smoother with little to no issues. I’m so happy that I managed to sort out everything on time before hand, which is something I learned that I had to do in this project.

Ioan’s voice acting was better than I thought it would be, and I’m really gratefu that he allowed me to use his voice for the video. It would have been weird if I recorded the dialogue myself considering the perspective is from a guy.

Nothing went wrong during filming, everything went smoothly and I’m really pleased with how some shots turned out. On Tuesday I will start to edit the video and place the clips in order relating to the video.
