Finding the right poem

Recently I’ve been really into poetry which is why I’ve decided to make a visual poem as my final project. I think poetry is a way of expressing yourself, or tell a story with a deeper meaning. I’ve always wanted to make a visual poem every since a lecturer showed us one last year. I don’t know why but there’s something about them I find very intriguing.

During my GCSE years, Carol Ann Duffy stood out to me a lot because her poems were filled with emotion. I found them easy to read and understand which is why I was drawn to her so much. Her work is filled with different topics, some controversial, but nonetheless I pretty much have enjoyed the poems I have read by her. My favourite poems from her are Havisham and Human Interest.

Havisham is a poem about a woman who has turned insane due to her fiance leaving her at the altar. In this poem, Duffy uses a lot of colours to describe the emotions this woman is feeling about her now ex-fiance. She absolutely despises this person and makes it very clear throughout the poem.

Human interest is a poem about a man that has recently murdered his girlfriend. He describes that he found about about her cheating on him and it eventually made him snap. The best part of the poem is the final line which says “I wouldn’t harm a fly, no joke.” which really emphasises the sly tone of the poem.

Another poet I’m drawn to is Neil Hilborn. I found out about him through social media and the way he tells his poetry always captivates me. The majority of his poetry details his experiences dealing with mental illness as he suffers from OCD and Bipolar disorder. My favourite poem by him is Joey.

Joey is about Neil and his childhood friend Joey who both suffered from depression. When joey confides in Neil in their teenage years, Neil basically tells him to “shut up” and “change his tampon” when someone else was around. This is an accurate portrayal of how people with mental health find it hard to speak up about their problems. He also details how he was able to afford treatment unlike Joey, but he’s lucky they’re still both alive in the end.

After considering all three of these poems, I’ve decided that I would like to make a visual poem for Human Interest. I chose this poem because as i was reading through it once again, I was able to picture how I would make the video for it. This is normally an indication for me that its the right choice.

For the other two poems I was able to visualise how I would make the video, however I felt as though Human Interest gave me a more clearer picture in my mind. I would’ve liked to make a video for Havisham, but I don’t think I would be able to make the set design as good as I would like it to be.

I am confident that I will be able to make a video for my chosen poem. It’s got enough details included in it to make a video and it could include some sort of symbolism. However I need to be careful not to throw too many ideas into one video as it can get jumbled and hard to follow. I have a vague idea on what type of story I would want to make for it, but first I need to analyse the poem itself which is what I will be doing in the next day or so. Analysing the poem will help me determine what type of story I want to go with, and how I will portray it in the video.
