Today I decided to focus on what type of video I want to make. I know I want to do a video that follows a narrative, but I chose to add a few other ideas into the mix in case I change my mind about what I want to do. After speaking to one of my friends about the visual poem idea, she said that I could probably make a music video out of it. I’m not sure how I would be able to do this, but I enjoy making music videos. I decided to add a few music videos into the mix in case I change my mind after generating some of these ideas.
I made a spider chart on Microsoft word to help me organise what I wanted to do. This way I have all my ideas onto one page. I decided to explain under each idea whether or not I thought it would be good enough for a final project. I did this because then it would be easier for me to decide on a final idea I want to pursue.

I’ll be explaining each idea in more detail here. Going around clockwise, the first idea is the orange box in the top left corner. This idea was about making a lyric video while also showing a story in the background. I’ve seen a few music videos that have done this before. Here’s an example:
This video doesn’t have the actual lyrics on the bottom of the screen, but it follows the same concept. As I watch this I find it easy to follow along with the story behind told while also reading the text at the bottom. Personally, I think the purpose of watching a music video is solely on how it looks and if there is any story following along. I do like this video and I think I can take some inspiration from it.
The next idea was a music video being shown through photographs. I came up with this idea around a month ago. My original plan for my final project was to make a photography portfolio but I changed my mind due to not being entirely sure what to photograph. This idea was inspired by my previous final project plan. This is a video that follows the same concept.
(This isn’t the original upload due to the artist deleting the video from her channel, so the video quality isn’t the best)
I find this video very cleverly made, it’s interesting to watch and the amount of dedication put into this video inspires me. Although I like the video, I don’t see myself making something like this. I could do it and it may be achievable, but it doesn’t really appeal to me as much as I thought it would. I like the editing and style, but depending on how smoothly my project goes, I don’t know if I’ll be able to edit all the photos together.
The next idea was a music video that focuses more on visuals than a story line. I did this last year for my final project and a lot of people seemed to like it. Here’s a music video for reference.
I think the visuals in this video are cool and interesting to look at. I like how the makeup artists managed to blend the two into the wall behind them. I did something like this with a projector last year for a final project, but I don’t want to repeat myself again. It’s creative and gives the opportunity for me to show that I can make something plain look really nice, but this year I want to focus more on a story line.
The next idea was to make an animated video. I feel as though I passed a lot of opportunities to make an animated video longer than 10 seconds on this course, so this could be a good chance to do that
This video is animated well, but I know that I wouldn’t be able to make something as good as this. My drawing skills aren’t the best and I remember having a hard time using Adobe flash simply because I didn’t understand it. If I was better at drawing and animation then I would’ve done something like this for my final project.
The next idea was a poem shown on screen through animation. I couldn’t find anything on YouTube. In a way music is basically poetry. I found a lyric video for a song I enjoy that follows a dark theme that I find is somewhat poetic.
I do like how this video looks, however I would much rather make something that features people/animals/landscapes rather than just words on a screen. It may be creative in some aspect but personally I wouldn’t want to finish college on a lyric video I made.
The next choice was a stop-motion music video. This was my original plan for last year’s project but I decided against it. Stop-motion is similar to animation depending on how you make it. This is an example of a stop motion music video.
I do like how this video looks, and just like the second video I mentioned on this post I appreciate the dedication put into the video. I am considering doing a stop motion video for my final project, I think it would be a good experiment for me and would develop my animation skills.
The next idea was a music video that follows a narrative and is also visually stunning. This mixes both of my plans from last year and this year. I may chose this idea over the others. Here’s a music video I had in mind.
I like this music video because it follows a deep and personal story line, while also including some shots that I think are just beautiful. This concept gives me the opportunity to show my creative skills, as well as my ability to pre-plan and come up with a decent story line. if I manage to create something like this that I enjoy watching then I will be happy.
The next idea was a visual poem embedded with symbolism. I’ve always wanted to experiment with symbolism as I find it very interesting and makes a video have a deeper meaning. I couldn’t find a video relating to this, so again I chose to find a music video.
This music video is full of symbolism which is why I’m so drawn to it. It highlights the problems with police brutality, race division and pride. I’d like to make a video that has hints of symbolism, it’s just a case of trying to figure out how to do it well and if it would work with the poem I chose.
The next idea was a music video that mainly focused on narrative rather than good visuals. This is opposite to what I did last year. Here’s a music video that mainly focuses on telling a story.
I like this video because the story is played out in a lot of detail, it follows the lyrics of the song and (for me) it draws you into watching it. I haven’t seen another music video that follows a story similar to this which is probably why I find it interesting to watch. Although I like the story, there isn’t a lot of shots that I thought were artistic.
The final idea I listed was a video that follows a serious or dark theme. I’ve seen quite a few videos that feature dark themes. I found this visual poem with a serious theme about life.
After carefully thinking about these ideas and cancelling out the ideas I thought weren’t good enough to do, I’ve decided to make a video that follows a narrative including some sort of symbolism. I’ve always wanted to experiment with symbolism and videos I watch that include it always seem to draw me in. I feel as though I have the opportunity to make a video that stands out from the rest of the work I’ve done here at college.
